Qld: Man dies in hospital after gasfield fire

BRISBANE, April 8 AAP - One of the three men badly burned in an explosion at a gasdrilling site in south-west Queensland has died in hospital.

The 40-year-old man died late last night in the burns unit of the Royal Brisbane Hospitalafter suffering burns to more than 80 per cent of his body.

Two other men remain in a serious but stable condition in the hospital with burns to20 per cent of their bodies.

The men were on a drilling rig at an exploratory gas field site at Myall Creek nearSurat, 500km west of Brisbane, when a fire broke out about 11.30am (AEST) yesterday.

A further six people were treated on the scene but did not require further help.

Government and exploration company experts were due to reach the site of the explosiontoday to try to determine its cause.

The fire has been contained at the gas wellhead but allowed to remain burning to helpinvestigators determine its cause.

The rig was being operated by Century Drilling under contract to Oil Company of Australia(OCA), a subsidiary of Origin Energy.

Original Energy general manager of public and government affairs Tony Wood said itwas still too early to say what had caused the fire.

Mr Wood said the risk of pollutants was reduced because it was a natural gas fire andbecause the well was not yet in full production.

Two Department of Natural Resources investigators have flown to the site, with an investigationexpected to take several weeks.
